The best completely free Android games: no ads, no in-app purchases

Some of the best things in life are free, and with a little bit of discretion we can certainly apply that to Android games. While there are tons of free games on the Google Play Store, most of them either have in-app purchases – or are riddled with annoying ads. But know that there are several high quality free Android games out there that not only cost nothing but also don’t annoy you with ads! Well, here is a list of free Android games that you can play with no strings attached!

The Google Play Store is a real gold mine for free games and apps. However, most of these free games are also notorious for annoying you with ads and prompts for in-app purchases. While there are apps and games that come out without ads, there is a tendency to write them off as inferior stuff just because the developer doesn’t really make any money off of them. Tell you what, that’s not exactly the truth!

Just because a game is free without an IAP doesn’t mean it has to be of poor quality. Some of the best free games out there can take on the big budget giants with nothing but passion, great design, and goodwill. These top free Android games don’t cost a single penny. Enjoy them without burdening your wallet or annoying advertising!

Battle for Wesnoth

Battle for Wesnoth is an unofficial Android port of a turn-based fantasy strategy game that already has its own community on the PC. The free game features multiple story-based campaigns and a ton of different units from different fantasy races. You can play against AI or other players.

Battle for Wesnoth has been around for years and doesn’t offer lush graphics, but plenty of depth and is still regularly updated by the developers and the community. The Android version is a real passion and is easy to use, and not too demanding at all on a modern phone, although you’ll want a decently sized screen for a good view of what’s going on.

Stranger Things: The Game

This is a must see if you are a fan of Stranger Things. The game is set in Hawkins, Indiana in 1984 and puts you in the first and second seasons of the popular television show. This game could particularly appeal to the generation who grew up playing 16-bit games on their consoles and who are now 40 years old and relive their childhood. Of course, it helps if you’ve seen Stranger Things – but hey, that’s no excuse not to download and play this piece!

Gamers of a certain age will remember losing many hours of their precious youth to the brutal first-person shooter pioneer Doom. This game is effectively a Doom port made with an original set of assets and levels of play to avoid infringing copyright laws.

Freedoom basically plays like the classic, as the assets are different but still recognizable in the style of the original. You’re still wiping out ugly creatures in a vague industrial wasteland, and all of the fun action, atmosphere, and suspense of Doom is in a not entirely different skin here.

From 2021 the game had some legal problems – but remains playable. But the active development of this project has ceased.

As an added bonus, if you want to play the original on your phone, you can always load your old (legal, of course) original Doom WAD files into the app’s configuration folder. Fantastically, this also applies to similar games on the same engine, such as Heretic, Witches and Strife, or the different mods of these games that are available online.

Pixel dungeon

The various Pixel Dungeon titles are villainous dungeon crawl games with primitive graphics (but great gameplay) that punish failure harshly but were so easy to learn and play again after each character death that I stopped worrying and learned to love the new start.

It’s a simple tap of a finger to control everything, and while Watabou’s “simple” Pixel Dungeon game has unlockable character classes and tons of items to enjoy the game with, there are plenty of other addicting versions like Shattered Pixel Dungeon , Pixel Dungeon Unleashed, etc. that have twists and other functions based on the original. Note that the Google Play Store now says the game now has in-app purchases. However, I did not come across any.

Unciv is an open source reimplementation of the classic civilization game about empire building, expansion, resource management, economic and technological development. It basically plays like Civilization V, but with very simple graphics. Nevertheless, the strategic depth remains impressively and Unciv is a small and lightweight app that runs like a dream even on low-end smartphones.

This cute little shoot-em-up puts the old-school spaceship scenario of spherical hell in a neon-covered skin with simple but attractive graphics, but the real appeal is the fast-paced action. It’s basically about blowing things up in different ways, unlocking rewards, and basking in the moving colors and sounds: what more could you want for free entertainment?

Pathos Nethack Codex

This game is a rogue dungeon crawling game with random area generation and a variety of different classes to choose from, items to collect and monsters to kill. Based on the old school Nethack rule set, Pathos is still updated with quality of life fixes, offering a selection of graphic tiles and hours of gameplay.

father and son

Father and Son is a story game that, interestingly, was published by an archaeological museum. The game tells the story of a father archaeologist who dedicated his life to his profession – and his artist son. The nature of his work does not allow the father to spend time with his family. The father wants his son to visit the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, where he can see his life’s work.

The story eventually turns into a story where you can relive several important historical events from the past. This is a relatively short game that only lasts about an hour. But a download is definitely worth it!

Mindustry is a hybrid tower defense sandbox factory game. In this game you will be able to create elaborate supply chains of conveyor belts to feed ammunition into your turrets, make materials for construction, and defend your buildings against waves of enemies. The game may seem a little intimidating at first. However, you can get used to it once you get used to it a little.

Lego hidden page

Lego Hidden Side is a game that was developed by, well, no prizes for guessing! This is an addicting game that combines the real and virtual worlds. With support for AR and multiplayer modes, the game continues to receive positive reviews from the Horde on the Google Play Store.

Special mentions

In this free deck building game you take on the role of the leader of a creepy Lovecraftian cult on a mission to bring your chosen sinister abomination to the world. As you play your cards, you also draw new cards depicting unexpected events that may aid or hinder your progress.

The sound creates a correspondingly creepy atmosphere, with a nice touch the radio is in the game, which reports on how the world is changed by your actions. Underhand is a complete game, if a little short, the random elements provide some replayability.

Bad hiding place

This game puts you in the evil footsteps of what is usually the enemy in video games – a dungeon boss. Your job is to build your den of evil and fill it with monsters and traps to destroy the pesky do-gooders who insist on invading and disturbing your peace. Make them pay because you don’t have to.

Warfare Incorporated

Warfare Incorporated is an old-school classic originally for Windows Phones and PalmOS devices, but its style goes back further to the real-time strategy games Command and Conquer. You need to build a base and raise an army to control the resources on the newly discovered planet Icarus. Sure, Warfare Incorporated looks dated by now, but the experience is proven and you won’t find a completely free mobile RTS with more features.
