Samsung tailored this phone for cellular carriers. As a result, not only do we get a pretty solid phone whether you buy it unlocked or with cellular incentives, but we get a phone that is above the price point in most categories. The battery life is great, the performance is consistent most of the time, and even the cameras do reasonably well during the day. The only downside is that the 120 Hz screen doesn’t get as bright as the competition.

$ 500 at Samsung

advantages

  • Bigger 120 Hz screen
  • Great battery life
  • Four years of security updates
  • IP67 water resistance
  • Tons of carrier incentives

disadvantage

  • No mmWave support
  • Screen is washed out
  • Weaker cameras, especially at night

The middle kid of the Google 2020 lineup is still a great option for 5G on a budget. With a more powerful processor than the A52 5G and the support of mmWave on the Verizon model, the Pixel 4a 5G is the more pragmatic choice when you’re on the go. The Pixel 4a 5G’s dual camera setup also outperforms the A52 5G’s triple camera array, especially at night.

  • Better camera processing
  • mmWave model available
  • More consistent performance

disadvantage

  • Smaller 60Hz screen
  • No water resistance

Once upon a time, you had to pay flagship prices in hopes of getting a great 5G phone that was worth using. But both Google and Samsung are now offering budget phones with Sub6 support and long-term update support for $ 500, though you won’t have to pay nearly as much for the A52 when you buy the phone from carriers in the coming months. Here’s why the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is falling short of the Google Pixel 4a 5G in a short amount of time and why you might still want to pay the full $ 500 for the Pixel.

This is a comparison that needs to deal with the little things, as these phones have a great deal in common: they’re both mid-range phones with decent processors and memory. Both have Sub6 5G coverage with a small mid-band, but if you want mmWave you’ll have to pay $ 600 for the Verizon version of the Pixel 4a 5G. Both phones still have headphone jacks, but the Pixel 4a 5G doesn’t have support for microSD. The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G uses a slightly newer 750G processor, but the 765G in the Pixel 4a 5G is a bit more powerful. Both of these should give you consistent performance, but the A52 slows down a bit faster when switching between multiple apps.

Screens are a bigger differentiator here, but not in the way you’d imagine: the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G has a larger 6.5-inch screen that can be viewed at 120Hz, unlike the older, slower ones 60 Hz of the Pixel 4a 5G However, the screen of the Galaxy A52 can be washed out faster outdoors than that of the Pixel 4a 5G. I’ve tried two Galaxy A52 5G devices and the Pixel 4a was significantly more readable outdoors, especially in full sun. Once you get close to dark or have significant cloud cover, the A52 5G screen looks more vibrant. However, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, then you should probably go for the Pixel. The A52’s Gorilla Glass 5 is also more shatterproof, but the Pixel 4a 5G’s Gorilla Glass 3 is more scratch-resistant. So pick your poison there.

The fingerprint under the A52’s screen is optical, not ultrasound. So when you press on it your finger will light up like ET or blind you if you missed the sensor. The Pixel 4a 5G, on the other hand, still uses the old-fashioned fingerprint sensor on the back, which I still love for the swipe to open notifications, but that means you have to lift the phone off the table to unlock it.

I want to clear up three things in this specification table: if you are in Europe you will have access to all four colors, and some countries will get 256GB of storage. However, here in the US they have Awesome Black and 128GB, and that’s it. While many Sub6 bands are listed on both phones, they are not available in all Galaxy A52 5G versions. Since the A52 is a phone that Samsung sells through multiple carriers in the US and abroad, Samsung will match the 5G bands to the carrier so that only the unlocked model has all the bands. That’s the compromise you make when buying the phone at a discount from your carrier – and with the right compromise, it seems worth it.

Google has better cameras and basics, but Samsung has more sophisticated features and hardware.

Samsung is adding some features here that Google left out on the Pixel 4a 5G: The Galaxy A52 5G is IP67 waterproof, so you don’t have to worry if it slips into the sink while washing dishes. You can use microSD cards to add more storage if you’re the type of person who carries every song and movie you’ve ever bought on your phone at all times. To my eternal disappointment, both phones lack wireless charging. Even so, Samsung has at least 25W wired charge when using Samsung’s fast chargers, rather than just the standard 18W power profile that the Pixels have been using since 2016.

Cameras seem stacked in Samsung’s favor too, but the numbers on a spec sheet don’t tell the full story, and the Pixel 4a 5G takes more consistent shots in daylight than the A52 5G, and quality multiplies once the sun goes down. The lighting of selfies on the A52 5G was also much more uneven: sometimes it’s great, and sometimes it just completely darkens or blows out the background. You will be able to get social media worthy shots at some point, but it will likely take twice as many shots as the Pixel.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G versus Google Pixel 4a 5G: Which one should you buy?

The biggest selling point for buying the A52 5G isn’t necessarily that it’s a much better phone than the Pixel 4a 5G – it’s slightly better in most areas, with the exception of mmWave support, cameras, and the 765G’s performance Pixel is a tiny bit more consistent than the 750G – it’s that the A52 5G is a $ 500 phone that sells at much lower prices. Less than a month after launch, AT&T has already cut the A52 5G down to a total of $ 5 per month for a total of $ 150 when you buy from AT & T’s installment plan. I bet the A52 will be available for free with an upgrade or new line in four months or less, or list for $ 200 off Prime Day and Black Friday this year.

The Pixel 4a 5G, on the other hand, is seeing the occasional sales, but nothing nearly as drastic as the A52, given that wireless carriers aren’t marketing the phone as heavily. The Pixel 4a 5G may get some discounts after the Pixel 5a 5G launches, but given the lack of Snapdragon chips, and the 765G in particular, it’s just as likely that the remaining US offer will sell out before the 5a launches.

A great phone with tremendous cellular incentives.

Samsung made a damn good phone with the A52 5G. I wish the screen was brighter and there was more support for mid-band – and the lack of mmWave will be a disappointment for Verizon customers – but if you’re with T-Mobile, AT&T, or one of their MVNOs, that’s this phone is going to see huge discounts that make it too hard to pass up.

How important are cameras to you?

Now that Samsung has four years of security patches and three years of platform updates, the Pixel 4a 5G has fewer software benefits to set itself apart. Thankfully, the camera experience is still remarkable enough to make this selection easy for shutterbugs, especially when it comes to a lot of nighttime shots. There is also a version with mmWave support, but you have to pay extra.
