With flagship and foldable smartphones priced between $ 1,000 and $ 1,800, phone insurance is needed more than ever. At the beginning of April, Amex started the mobile phone protection program. No registration is required as the plan automatically covers devices listed on a previous month’s cellular bill and paid for with an eligible American Express account.
The cell phone protection plan is available to American Express Platinum Card members
Once in the program, a device is insured for two claims for each 12 month period. Amex will reimburse the device owner for the amount earmarked to repair an insured phone or hand over $ 800 (after a $ 50 deductible) for a stolen handset. This may not cover the replacement cost of your stolen phone. However, if you have already taken out insurance for your expensive top shelf device, Amex insurance can serve as a second insurance policy.
Of course there are some limitations. If your device is stolen and you want to file a lawsuit with Amex, you must file a police report within 48 hours of the theft. If your device is leased, purchased for business purposes, purchased as part of a fleet, or linked to a prepaid account, you will not be eligible for the cell phone protection program.
