Dear Oppo Find X3 Pro,
For many years I have looked with suspicion at people who have written love letters to new devices or other objects. I was clueless at the time when I dismissed them as deluded brand crazies or sexual deviants. However, I have become exactly what I previously despised! Go ahead, I’ll give it my all to be shot in full digital glory, with my selfies being post-processed using cleverly built-in algorithms. From top to bottom, from bottom to top and back again. Scan me, scan me HDR’d! After all, my dear Find X3 Pro, you’re really good at that.
We have only known each other for less than a week, but have spent many days and nights together. I’ve felt great every time since we first met, and that’s why in this very personal (and definitely not written for public reading) letter I want to ask you if there is a way that we can get involved exclusively with each other .
Red, green, umber – you know them all
The author of this text softly, tenderly whispers the following lines:
You can show me the world
Shiny, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, when
Did you let your heart decide last?
Find X3 Pro, I stole those words from one of the most beautiful ballads of all time. They’re not my own, but they suit our situation so well. That’s because you showed me how colorful the world really is. 10-bit is not the description of my new cordless screwdriver, but the depth of color that caught my eye. To be precise, that’s 1,073,741,824 colors, of which I could only name a handful.
You capture all of these colors accurately through your two Sony IMX766 sensors and send them on their way down the 10-bit full path color engine. From the sensor to the Snapdragon 888 chipset to the 6.7-inch AMOLED display, you ensure that none of the colors are lost. Only when it comes to optimizing the AI scene does your performance fluctuate a little. Haha, but that’s just you, my toots!
However, with a little trial and error, I am always intrigued by the hues of color that appear on your display. It’s almost a shame that my laptop and monitor, with their 8-bit capabilities, are unable to show me what I see in you. You are ahead of your time! This is especially true when trying to process HEIC format images with Windows.
They show me motifs in a whole new way
I’ve been a hobby photographer for a long time and actually thought I had tried all areas of photography. Macro, astrophotography, architecture, selfies … the list goes on and on. I know everything and at some point you will sit in your familiar comfort zone and keep your lens on the same subjects.
You pulled me out of that comfort zone by giving me a whole new range of pocket-sized options. Perfect for driving around town or riding a bike. When I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, from a distance I feel a tingling sensation in my pocket. The closer I get, the more interesting you get.
We are a good team because together we look at the big picture without forgetting the smallest details. If you were a tool, you would be a universal wrench that would fit any nut and somehow still handle screws and make an omelette at the same time. In my previous camera phone relationships, it’s never been so easy. There were restrictions that I had to adhere to and I haven’t seen any with you.
Sure, you get fuzzy sometimes. Especially when it comes to telephotos, as you simply cannot keep up with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra because your telephoto lens is only equipped with 2x optical magnification before it comes into the range of the digital zoom. Your microscope has a maximum size of only three megapixels, but I don’t care. You woke my creativity out of hibernation and that’s what matters! And when I want good pictures, I can always rely on you.
Sony IMX766 is a strong pair of main cameras
You know what I mean. Your main cameras – and yes, I am right to say you have two main cameras. That’s because the custom Sony IMX766 that Papa Oppo (or is it Mama? Mappa?) Designed specifically for Sony is used in both your wide-angle camera and your ultra-wide-angle camera. Ultimately, we get a result that has the same premium quality that I have wanted in so many phones.
With the Google Pixel 4a 5G, which I had praised as a camera phone when it was released, the switch to the ultra-wide camera was always a thorn in my side. The quality deteriorated from then on, so I preferred to take a few steps back and almost landed in the Flensburg Fjord. Together with you I don’t have to fear that anymore. Not only because I now live in Berlin.
Finally, ultra-wide-angle cameras with high resolution are also available and offer a field of view of 110 degrees. This means that the angle of view is not too great and buildings can look straight and natural without being aligned to the millimeter. Most importantly, I’m no longer afraid of exploring new perspectives in extremely wide angles for fear of getting worse-looking photos. Find X3 Pro, you broaden my horizons.
Recording videos is only logical for you
Before I kiss you goodbye in this letter, would you like to embark on a lifelong journey with me? Because on April 1st, Oppo will finally release the .cube files for your LOG mode, and with these I want to take you out on a special date. Just the two of us, a candlelit dinner and then maybe a trip to the cinema? I will of course pay for a LOGe seat.
Unfortunately, at the moment Oppo was unable to send me your files and you may be wondering what I could be touching on here. Find X3 Pro, I know every millimeter of your software inside out and there I found a little switch with a “LOG” label on it. This means that we can record videos together that have a gamma curve log recorded on them. In theory, we record video files from which we can later take full advantage of the limitations of your sensors. Don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt at all either.
The .cube files I just told you about are called LUTs. These look-up tables convert your logarithmic gamma curve back to a standard gamma curve. However, since the original video contains the full contrast range of your sensor, we may have a lot more post-processing options.
However, we still have to check that the dynamic range of your sensor is large enough. But trust me, if it doesn’t, that’s fine with me. Maybe we can get medical assistance to get your performance going again!
“But two like us – they can never get lost!”
Dear Oppo Find X3 Pro, I would like to end my letter with these words from perhaps the greatest writer in German history: Udo Lindenberg. “Both of us, we will never lose each other,” he said in a song some time ago. Right now, no other phone can question your creative options. After transferring the recordings to a PC, only a little post-processing needs to be done in Lightroom. Nothing more than that, I promise!
Smartphone cameras explained: everything you need to know
Smartphone photography is often mocked and dismissed as a gimmick by “real” photographers. However, photography is not just about “scanning” a scene where every image needs to be captured in full sharpness down to the smallest detail. It’s also about being creative, exploring the possibilities and creating little works of art. Fuck the haters, find X3 Pro! They made me scurry around the apartment with childlike joy and made me stop repeatedly on bike rides because I really wanted to capture certain scenes that have to be unforgettable.
Every camera – whether super expensive professional equipment or entry-level smartphone – that manages to motivate me and other photo enthusiasts to discover new subjects has earned a place in my heart. And with you, I felt like I was a teenager for a few moments, when I discovered the world with the VGA camera on my first Sony Ericsson camera phone.
Here you can find all test photos in high resolution (external link to Google Drive)
Back then I was laughed at for it, by that stupid Max in chemistry class. Today smartphone photos inspire millions of people and I can write about them. So again, fuck the haters and fuck Max too! They definitely inspire me and the next generation of young tech fans.
Thank you for that, Find X3 Pro!
This article is an opinion and deliberately leaves out critical elements. These will be available in a few days in my extensive review of the Find X3 Pro.
