According to a report by the market research company Counterpoint, the iPhone 12 became the world’s best-selling smartphone in January 2021. According to the report, the iPhone 12, alongside the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, made up 71 percent of Apple’s smartphone sales for the month. The iPhone 12 series – consisting of the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and iPhone 12 mini – was launched last October, a little later than Apple’s regular iPhone launch plan. The phones have 5G support and have updated flat-edged designs from the iPhone 11 series. Both additions are said to have helped Apple win more customers against the competition.
In its Market Pulse report released on Friday, Counterpoint said Apple dominated the list of top-selling smartphones, taking up to six spots in the top ten top-selling smartphone models in January. The iPhone 12 topped the list, followed by the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Unsurprisingly, nearly a third of Apple’s iPhone 12 series sales came from the United States, Counterpoint said in its report. It added that strong carrier promotions and the demand for 5G in the country were among the top drivers behind Apple’s growth. The iPhone 12 Pro Max was the top-selling model in the United States as consumers in the country preferred the top-end model to the regular iPhone 12.
After the iPhone 12 series, the iPhone 11 was the fourth largest smartphone in the world, according to Counterpoint. The iPhone 11 was launched in September 2019 and has been selling well around the world months after its launch. A February report claimed the iPhone 11 was the top-ship smartphone in 2020, with over 64.8 million units shipped worldwide.
In addition to the iPhone 11, the iPhone SE 2020 also made it into the list of the best-selling smartphones in January. The iPhone 12 mini, which is often believed not to have achieved the same level of success as other iPhone 12 models, also made it into the top 10 best-selling smartphones in January.
After the iPhone models, the affordable Redmi 9A and Redmi 9 from Xiaomi took fifth and sixth places in the list, respectively. Both phones are said to have made up 25 percent of Xiaomi’s total smartphone sales per month.
The Samsung Galaxy A21s secured a place in the top 10 best-selling smartphones in January, with the Galaxy A31 being a new entry.
“As the pace of adoption of 5G networks increases, OEMs are bringing more 5G devices to market in various price segments,” said Monika Sharma, research fellow at Counterpoint Research. “5G is slowly becoming a standard offering and as prices continue to fall, we’ll see more mid-size 5G-enabled smartphones on the bestseller list in the coming months.”
