India was the fastest growing app market in the world in 2020. This emerges from the data from the mobile market research company Adjust. The latest analysis shows that India saw a significant 49 percent growth in 2020 compared to 2019 in terms of mobile app growth. The fastest growing industry in India in terms of mobile apps has been education, while gaming appears to be growing relatively slowly compared to other countries, although it was the industry that saw the highest overall growth.
According to data from Adjust, a mobile device research firm, India was the fastest growing region in the world in terms of mobile app growth. It grew 49 percent in 2020 compared to 2019 when India was in the middle of the field among other countries like Argentina, Brazil, Thailand, Spain, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and many others. India saw the highest growth in apps and games, while Argentina saw the highest growth in pure games.
According to Mobile Marketing Association India, there were 700 million unique mobile phone subscribers in the country, of which 451 million were internet users. Education was also found to be the fastest growing app industry in India, followed by business apps, food apps, social apps, and then games. Gaurav Shitak, Vice President and Head of Digital Marketing at Sharekhan, noted that gaming appears to be “growing less rapidly in India than the rest of the world” – or it could simply be that other industries outperformed games in terms of growth.
Although COVID-19 resulted in an increase in mobile shopping around the world, e-commerce saw relatively little growth in India in 2020. In addition, entertainment was the seventh highest growing industry in India with a relatively small gap between education and training. Associate Vice President Marketing at Sony Pictures Networks India found India to be one of the fastest growing areas for streaming / OTT in the world.
Overall, the gaming industry saw the greatest growth in any country, with Argentina leading the way with year-over-year growth of over 60 percent. Vietnam, Brazil, China, Mexico, Colombia and other countries followed. India ranked 12th when it came to gambling growth.
