If you’ve just bought a new Samsung Galaxy smartphone and you want to transfer data from your old phone to the new device, Samsung has a really good tool called the Samsung Smart Switch that can do this job for you. Here’s how you can use Samsung Smart Switch to transfer content from your old smartphone to compatible Samsung Galaxy devices.

Switching from one phone to another has gotten a lot easier over the years. From 2021, there will be several seamless methods for this, regardless of smartphone model and operating system. We have discussed how to transfer content from your old smartphone to a new one in this in-depth article. However, we felt that the Samsung smartphones deserve their own article because of the extensive features of the Samsung Smart Switch.

Before you start

There are a few things to consider before using Samsung Smart Switch to transfer content from your old smartphone to the new Samsung device. The very first requirement is that Samsung Smart Switch will only work to transfer data to Samsung devices. For example, you cannot use this tool to transfer data from a Samsung device to a OnePlus device, for example.

Transferring content wirelessly from one smartphone to another is no longer as daunting as it used to be. It’s almost as quick as doing the job with wires. So this is our preferred method of transferring content from device to device. Now, depending on your smartphone model (and the operating system running on it), let’s take a look at how to use the Samsung Smart Switch to wirelessly transfer content.

Samsung Smart Switch: How to wirelessly transfer content from another Android smartphone

The first thing you need to do is make sure that the Samsung Smart Switch app is installed on both affected devices. If your source smartphone is not a Samsung device, you can download the Smart Switch Android app from the Google Play Store.

This app is pre-installed on most Samsung devices and can be accessed via the following menu:

  • to open the settings.
  • Tap Accounts and backup.
  • Tap Smart Switch.

The Smart Switch app may not be preinstalled on some lower-priced Samsung devices. Here is what you need to do in such a scenario.

  • Tap Take over data from the old device Bring under the Smart Switch section.
  • You will be asked to download Smart Switch.
  • Proceed to the on-screen instructions and download the app.
  • After installing the app, grant the necessary permissions.

Once you’ve made sure that Samsung Smart Switch is installed on both phones, open the app on both devices. You will see a screen that says “Transfer data to your new phone” (or let’s go). Make sure that both devices are physically close to each other.

  • On the old phone, tap Send data / let’s go.
  • You will now be asked to choose how you want to connect the two devices. Choose Wireless.
  • On the old phone, you will get a pop-up screen called Invitation to Connect. Tap Accept.
  • The new phone will now try to connect to your old phone. A prompt will appear on the old phone to allow the connection. Tap on enable.
  • The connection is established immediately.

  • The new phone will now show you the things you can choose to transfer. This screen also shows the estimated amount of space the transferred data should occupy on your new phone and the time it will take to complete the transfer.
  • The app also lets you fine-tune what you’re importing from your old phone. For example, if you tap the arrow next to each option, you’ll see a submenu with the content to import. For example, if you tap the arrow next to Messages, you can choose to import all text messages stored on your phone or those from a selected time period. You can do the same for pictures and videos too, choosing only the ones you need on your new phone.
  • Once you’ve made sure everything, scroll down on the new phone and tap and transfer.
  • When the transfer is complete, click Done on your new phone.

Samsung Smart Switch: How to Transfer Content from Another Android Phone by Cable

While the wireless method of transferring content is the easiest way to use Smart Switch, there are times when you need to use a cable. Here’s how to transfer content from Android phone to Samsung phone by cable.

Things you need: USB cable, OTG adapter.
Note: If you have a Lightning to USB-C or USB-C to USB-C cable, you don’t need an adapter.

  • Install the Smart Switch Android app from the Google Play Store.
  • Connect both phones with the cable.
  • Open the Smart Switch app on the old phone.
  • Open on your Samsung device the settings.
  • Tap Accounts and backup.
  • Tap on Smart switch.
  • Tap Send data / Let’s Go on the old phone.
  • Tap on electric wire.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions and choose the content you need on your new phone.
  • Tap Transfer and wait for the process to finish.

If you are switching from an iPhone to a Samsung device, Samsung recommends using cables to accomplish this. To do this, you’ll need a Lightning to USB-C cable, a USB-C to USB-C cable (with an adapter) to continue. This is how you can start the process.

  • On the Samsung device, tap the settings and then go to Accounts and backup.
  • Tap Smart Switch.
  • If Smart Switch is not installed, please follow the steps here.
  • On the new phone, open Smart Switch, then tap Receive data.
  • Tap on iPhone / iPad on the Source screen.
  • Connect the cable between the two devices and tap trust on the pop-up that appears on the iPhone.
  • Tap Next on the Samsung device. During this process, you may be asked to enter your iPhone passcode.
  • Samsung will now search your iPhone for data to be imported
  • On the next page you will see a selection of things that can be imported.
  • Select all the dates you want, scroll down and tap on the option that says transfer.
  • Depending on the amount of data to be transferred, this can take between 30 minutes and several hours.

The second way (ex) iPhone users can transfer data to a new Samsung device is by using iCloud to do it. Note, however, that iCloud doesn’t secure as many things as the wired method allows. Use this as the second option.

  • Open Smart Switch on the new Samsung device.
  • Tap on Receive data and then select iPhone / iPad.
  • Tap on the option that says Instead, get data from iCloud at the bottom.
  • Enter your iCloud and AppleID credentials and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • You may be asked to enter your verification code. Tap OK.
  • Select everything you want to import from iPhone and tap Import.

If you have a high capacity USB stick or microSD card, you can use it to transfer data from your old Android phone to the new Samsung phone. For the SD card option to work, both devices should have a microSD card slot.

  • Insert the microSD card into the old phone.
  • Install Smart Switch on the old phone from the Google Play Store.
  • Open Smart Switch and tap the SD card icon in the top right corner, then tap To back up.
  • You can now choose what to back up.
  • After making your selection, tap To back up again and wait for the process to finish.
  • Remove the SD card from the old phone and insert it into the SD card slot on the new Samsung phone.
  • Open Smart Switch on the Samsung phone.
  • Tap the SD card icon in the top right corner, then tap Restore.
  • Select all of the items you want to restore, then tap Restore again.
  • Tap Done when the process is complete.

The good thing about Samsung Smart Switch is that you can transfer content from really old / outdated platforms like Windows Phones and BlackBerry. Here’s how you can do that.

  • On the Samsung device, open Smart Switch by going to. walk the settings -> Accounts and backup -> Smart switch.
  • Click here if your Samsung phone did not come with the Smart Switch pre-installed.
  • Tap on Receive data, and then select Windows Phone / Blackberry.
  • You will now see instructions on how to download Smart Switch to your old device.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.
  • Once the software is installed on your old phone, open the Smart Switch app and then tap Connect.
  • You will be asked to connect to a network and the password for that network will be displayed on the new phone.
  • Enter the password and wait for the data to be transferred.
