The Chromecast with Google TV has a new Google TV layout that is very good for the most part. All of your apps are at your fingertips, you can easily search for shows or movies from your favorite genres and Google Assistant means any show or movie is just a voice command away. This is one of the many reasons Chromecast is one of the best streaming devices with Google TV on how to turn off personalized recommendations and enter apps-only mode on Google TV.

How to enable apps only mode in Google TV

  1. Go to the home screen Left to your profile picture.

It takes a second or 10, but your home screen will reload with a much more minimal interface that is just your installed apps and the five sponsored ads that you can never turn off.

Services not available in app-only mode

This is a nice, minimalist look, and as much as I love it, there are a couple of key reasons why you’ll likely be turning apps-only mode back off within hours:

  • Google Assistant and search functions are disabled.
  • Purchased YouTube or Google TV content isn’t available through the Google TV user interface, so you’ll have to stream it from a phone or computer instead.
  • Your watchlist cannot be accessed.

If you’ve never bought a movie or TV show from Google TV, Google Play, or YouTube, that second condition doesn’t mean much, but the Apps Only mode only shows other apps, not the actual Google TV app that your purchased content. This is a very wrong omission, and one that makes it quite difficult for longtime Google Play / Android users to avoid normal mode with recommendation junk.

The bigger problem is that it disables Google Assistant Wholesale, so there is no need to use voice commands to rewind, skip forward, or quickly bring up Moana for the millionth time instead of reaching into the Disney + app. Assistant is one of those things that you can do without, but once you get used to it

Of course, the real truth is hidden in all that jargon on the apps-only mode screen: disable your ability to see The recommendations don’t prevent Google or other apps from tracking your watch history. Apps-only mode only disables the visual recommendations, it does not change any privacy settings to limit what data is collected about you and your viewing habits.
