Gmail and Google Photos are two of Google’s best services. But they have never worked well together until now. So if you continue to use Google Photos even after Google removed unlimited storage and not switched to a cloud backup alternative, you can now save photos directly to Google Photos with one click.

In May 2021, Google announced that the two services would now work better together. You can save photos sent via email directly to Google Photos, but there are some limitations. First, it only works with JPEG images. Second, it only works when viewing Gmail in a browser. that is not yet for mobile. That’s how it’s done.

How to move photos from Gmail to Google Photos

When you receive an email with a JPEG photo attachment, there are two ways to save it to Google Photos.

  1. Hover your mouse over the photo and click the icon in the lower right corner, which looks like a Google Photos icon with a plus symbol.

  2. The first time you’re doing this, you’ll be asked to confirm that you want to save photos from Gmail to Google Photos. click to save.

Subsequent saves are not provided with this dialog box. They are only saved in photos. When you hover over the photo again, the icon changes to a Google Photos logo with a check mark. Clicking that check mark will take you to Google Photos to view the photo.

Save an image in Google Photos by opening the attachment

If the photo is saved as an attachment or sent inline, there is a second option to move the image in Photos.

  1. Click the image to open it in a dialog box.

  2. Click the three dots in the upper right corner> Save to photos.

If this is your first time you will be prompted to click as above to save. Otherwise the photo will be saved and you can click on the three dots> Saved in photos to open the image in Google Photos.
