Believe it or not, not everyone prefers to speak English at home (gasp!). Some speak a different language as their primary means of communication, while others want to practice their skills in learning a new language. The good news is that Amazon made it easy to change the default language Alexa listens and responds to. This can be done in the Amazon Alexa app or directly on touchscreen Echo devices. We’ll show you how to change the language Alexa speaks on your Amazon Echo devices.
Alexa can speak in seven languages (and regional dialects of those languages): English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Amazon hopes to add more supported languages.
Alexa is also able to operate multilingual mode – All you have to do is ask Alexa! Just go to your Echo device and say, “Alexa, do you speak Spanish” or “Alexa, do you speak English and Spanish,” and your trusted assistant will answer as you speak to them. If you want to go back to your main language, you can just ask Alexa to “stop speaking Spanish” or whatever the second language you used.
The multilingual mode varies by region and country. However, there are a handful of language pairs that you can combine depending on where you live. For example:
- German and English (UK or US)
- English and Spanish (UK or US and Spain or Mexico)
- English and French (UK or US or Canada and France or Canada)
- English and Italian (UK or US and Italy)
- English and Hindi (India)
- English and Japanese (US and Japan)
