Horizon Zero Dawn is a must before Horizon Forbidden West launches

It’s easy to say that everyone should play the predecessor of a sequel before the sequel is released, but that’s not always the case. There are times when, frankly, you don’t have to play the first or second game in a series before picking up the latest version. While you Makes To be able to get into Horizon Forbidden West without playing Zero Dawn, I really don’t think you should. And now that it will be free on April 19th as part of PlayStation’s PlayStation Home initiative, you have no excuse not to pick it up.

Horizon Zero Dawn still looks flawless on PS4 and PS5.

Horizon Zero Dawn was released in 2017 and still looks flawless on PS4 and PS5 today. The following is the story of a young woman named Aloy in the 31st century, long after a great catastrophe devastated civilization. What was left of society regressed to tribes who rarely used technology. Yet remnants of the “ancients”, Earth’s earlier advanced society, scatter the land in the form of giant mechanical beasts. When these machines get mixed up, Aloy begins to uncover the secret behind what happened.

The Forbidden West will continue Aloy’s journey as she is sent into uncharted territory to find the source of a mysterious plague that is wreaking havoc on the country. Meanwhile, Sylens, who appears for the first time in Zero Dawn, tries to understand why the KI HADES was reactivated. This is one of the central plot points in Zero Dawn and seems just as important in Forbidden West.

Horizon Zero Dawn was an instant hit for Sony and developer Guerilla Games, the first new IP since Killzone. After its second anniversary in 2019, PlayStation announced that it had sold well over 10 million copies. Studio managing director Hermen Hulst later became head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios and took over Shuhei Yoshida. That speaks a lot for the success of the game.

As important as the narration of a game is, studios want sequels to be accessible in order to reach the widest possible audience. Guerrilla Games will likely try to make Forbidden West as palatable as possible to newbies, but in the case of this series – and as with many of PlayStation’s first-party franchises – if you don’t play Horizon, you’re really missing out on Zero Dawn.

And not only should you play it to prepare for Horizon Forbidden West, but you should just play it because it is one of the best PS4 games ever made. It’s up there with the likes of The Last of Us and God of War, and some would even argue that it’s better than either.

Horizon Forbidden West is set to come out this year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it falls victim to the myriad of game delays we’ve already seen. The gaming industry has been hit hard by the pandemic, and some places are still trying to get used to their work-at-home scenarios.
