Google Pixel 5a: News, Leaks, Releases, Specs, and Rumors!

While the release may have taken longer than originally hoped, the Pixel 4a turned out to be one of the best Android phones for 2020 last year. Between the OLED display, the reliable performance, the impressive cameras, and the $ 349 price tag it’s a phone that is still a killer value even in 2021.

As good as the Pixel 4a continues to be, it’s time to look ahead to what’s next – the Google Pixel 5a in particular. Whether you’re interested in the latest tech rumors, want to see design leaks, or anything else, here’s everything you need to know about Google’s upcoming Pixel!

The best camera under $ 400

Put simply, the Pixel 4a is one of the best values the smartphone market has to offer today. The camera is better than ever, the performance is fast enough, the battery is reliable, and there is even a headphone jack. Say you’re a fan of smaller phones and don’t mind the bland design. The Pixel 4a is one of the best deals out there.

One of the Pixel 4a’s biggest selling points was its price. With the Pixel 5a, we expect Google to be committed to making it as affordable as possible. The Pixel 3a debuted in 2019 at an MSRP of $ 399, and a year later the 4a launched at an even cheaper price of $ 349. With the Pixel 5a, Google has several options.

VPN offers: Lifetime license for $ 16, monthly plans from $ 1

On the one hand, Google could try to cut the price even further – possibly down to $ 299. Another $ 50 price cut would mean very few upgrades over the Pixel 4a year over year. However, if Google is able to keep that core pixel experience and make the 5a even more accessible, it could be huge for the company.

Another option is to stick to the $ 349 price tag for another year, offering subtle improvements if possible. As you can see in the leaked renders in this article, it already looks like Google will be offering two rear cameras for the Pixel 5a that the 4a only had one for.

Staying at $ 349 seems more likely, but at this point it’s just a matter of waiting and seeing until we hear something else.

Google Pixel 5a Availability

Aside from price, another big question surrounding the Pixel 5a is when can we buy it. The Pixel 3a was featured on Google I / O on May 7, 2019. After months of delays, the Pixel 4a was officially announced on August 3, 2020.

We initially thought the Pixel 5a would return to the May release window, but Google has made it clear that the phone will hit the market around the same time as the Pixel 4a last year. So we’re looking at a sales launch in August.

The bigger problem, however, is availability: Google has confirmed that the Pixel 5a will be limited to the US and Japan as the phone won’t make it to other global markets. The global shortage of chips has had a direct impact on Google, and while the Pixel 5a will launch later this year, availability will be much more limited than its predecessors.

This is where things start to get interesting. We saw our first Pixel 5a renders on February 22nd, 2021 – and as you can see, it really looks like it quantity like the Pixel 4a 5G. In fact, it looks pretty much the same.

Just like the 4a 5G, this Pixel 5a render has a 6.2-inch display with a hole-punch cutout, two rear cameras, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. We also have the exact same camera design, what appears to be a three-dimensional construction, and another boring black paint job.

Reusing the Pixel 4a 5G’s hardware would make the Pixel 5a much cheaper for Google to manufacture. If that’s the case here, a lower price may not be an option. It would surely have been nice to have a visual difference between the 5a and its predecessor, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen this year.

Google Pixel 5a Technical specifications

We talked about the Pixel 5a’s price, availability, and design – but what about its specs? While we haven’t received a lot of information yet, there are some things to look forward to and speculate about.

The Pixel 5a’s render leak also revealed some minor specs that suggest the phone will have a 6.2-inch OLED display with a Full HD + resolution and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Other than that, the rest of the time is down to the imagination.

From our point of view, it’s pretty likely that the Pixel 5a has something in the Snapdragon 700 series for its chipset. The Snapdragon 750G would be a nice upgrade over the Pixel 4a’s Snapdragon 730G chipset, and that would allow for 5G connectivity as well.

We can probably also expect another year with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and a refresh rate of 60Hz for the display. It would be amazing to see Google ramp it up to 90Hz for the Pixel 5a, but nothing currently suggests it.

In terms of the camera situation, it’s most likely the exact same setup as the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 – that is, a 12.2-megapixel primary camera and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide sensor.

Will there be a Pixel 5a XL?

While we haven’t heard about a Pixel 5a XL, the 6.2-inch screen size for the regular Pixel 5a means it will be considerably larger than last year’s model. The Pixel 4a’s 5.8-inch display made it a really compelling option for fans of smaller phones. So an increase to 6.2 inches is the key difference.

Will the Pixel 5a have 5G support?

If we were to guess, we would say 5G is a likely function for the Pixel 5a. Many other manufacturers have released inexpensive cell phones that enable 5G connectivity. If Google is to be taken seriously by carriers and consumers alike, 5G is a must-have for even the cheapest phone of the year.
