How the tide has turned. Android users once heavily criticized Snapchat for the poor performance of the app. The experience wasn’t quite the same quality as the iOS app, which resulted in owners of the best Android phones leaving the platform in swaths. Things changed when the company launched the newly created app in 2019. Snap’s latest financial results show how popular the app has become with Android users.

According to Snap, more daily active users accessed the app on Android than on iOS in the first quarter of 2021. In addition, the number of daily active users rose 22% year over year to 280 million, which in part helped Snap and CEO Evan Spiegel to relax COVID-19 restrictions and to encourage Snap’s investment in new content:

The vast majority of smartphones in the world are powered by Android, and our Android user base is now larger than our iOS user base – an important milestone that reflects the long-term value of the investment we have made in rebuilding our Android application .

As Der Spiegel notes, most smartphones around the world run on Android, and companies like Samsung and Qualcomm have invested heavily to offer 5G at lower prices. More of the best cheap Android phones with 5G connectivity are launched like the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy A52, which makes multimedia apps like Snapchat more accessible.

Another popular application, Clubhouse, has yet to build an Android app, though companies like Facebook and Twitter are dwarfing it by adding similar functionality on their respective platforms. Perhaps Snapchat’s impressive growth will result in accelerating investments in the Android ecosystem, but we won’t be holding our breath.
