There is a new function something Android tablets called Entertainment Space. It looks a lot like the Chromecast with the Google TV interface and debuts on Walmart tablets, followed by select models from Lenovo and Sharp, although there’s no indication that manufacturers will need it. You may not see this feature on your Galaxy Tab S or one of the other best Android tablets.
This new attention to tablets may be good news for any of us who are tablet fans, but I think it’s important to consider why. Google is still not interested in Android tablets, but they like quick fixes to take advantage of a one-time jump in sales.

2020 somehow sucked. Most of us were stuck at home for at least a short time, and after counting all the cracks in the walls, we needed something to pass the time. In addition to being bored, many people needed a quick way to see and talk to teachers and bosses, family members and friends through video conferencing. It was inevitable that things like tablets and cheap Chromebooks would see a significant increase in sales.
The new entertainment section seems like a great way to see recommendations for things to keep us occupied, but also a way to increase Google’s engagement and even sales. Do you see a book or film that piques your interest? Get it from Google Play! Here’s a nice, little time consuming game of in-app purchases where Google cuts down on every transaction. Look at her! These are all small things, but they add up. Probably the full amount when all is said and done.
Google did the right thing and found a way to make money from a one-time spike in Android tablet sales.
Google would have been stupid not to take advantage of this situation. It already knows how to combine referrals with ways to make more money for the business because that is exactly what the Chromecast with Google TV interface is. Every time it drives you to Hulu, it drives another person to YouTube to buy or rent a movie or show. It’s good business because it helps make money in a way that will also benefit users.
There is another benefit. It makes Google look like it is doing what we want it to be, which is to draw more attention to the Android tablet experience. Google can write a blog post that shows how nice the new feature looks and tells us how much we’ll love it. Sites like Android Central, 9to5Google, and The Verge can pass these messages on to regular people who use an Android tablet and who probably think the new feature is pretty cool. Google looks like the good guy here, and that’s it always a victory.

I hate being the one to say it out loud, but Google still doesn’t care about Android tablets. In that case, there could have been many other things instead of creating a new Discovery feed when you swipe the home screen. Google didn’t care anymore about Android tablets when it became clear that it would never make money from them. Without a plethora of eyeballs glued to advertisements on a tablet screen, there is no incentive. When we saw a presumably one-time increase in Android tablet sales, Google saw a once-in-a-lifetime moment to make money.

Yeah, I look like a cynic who hates everything and thinks google is run by monsters. I know that. But really, that’s not hard to sift through because Google is a company. It’s not a company that cares about us as people – although some in the company certainly seem to be caring, kind people – it’s a company that cares about making a profit and making its shareholders happy. You make shareholders happy when you make them more money. Every decision in any for-profit organization, including Google, is made to increase bottom line.
I wish this news meant that suddenly Google was looking at Android tablets again. Gear like the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus is fucking amazing, but when you step away from the work Samsung has done to bring a good tablet experience, you are left with a Play Store full of things that work half as well at best Plate of OLED in your hands. As a Chromebook user, I have want Optimized content for large screens and attention for a touch-based interface for large screens.
However, I am not holding my breath. Entertainment Space is likely to turn out to be a one-off that may not even find its way to better tablets that you should be buying. It’s sad, but it’s business as usual too.
