Apple AirTag: Keep track of everything through the Find My app

Array

Apple fans have been waiting for this little device for so many years – and now the Apple AirTags are finally available. Say goodbye to losing your belongings when you’re happy to spend $ 29 on every keychain, wallet, or pet you own.

So easy, really. And yet so difficult to bring to market.

The Apple fan community has been waiting for the AirTags for almost two years. As early as 2019 or since iOS 13, Apple gave us the first indications of the new Apple trackers. The idea is that you attach them to keys, bags, or anything else you’d like to lose. For me, that would probably be my wallet. The concept is not new at all: Samsung has been selling its tiles since 2012.

AirTags are of course deeply integrated into Apple’s operating systems. With the “Find My” function, elements attached to AirTag can be found quickly and easily. In the “Find My” app, your content is then displayed on a map that guides you quickly and precisely to the relevant element. If you are within Bluetooth range, a tone can be played on the AirTag.

Each AirTag is equipped with a U1 chip developed by Apple to enable an accurate search for iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 users. As soon as you move, information from the camera, ARKit, accelerometer and gyroscope is merged to guide you to the AirTagged object on a map using real-time acoustic, haptic and visual feedback. Sounds complicated and could also explain the long time it took the Cupertino-based company to finally get around the corner with its small device.

Data protection is also important with AirTags

Apple attaches great importance to data protection and the protection of customer data – and this also applies to the AirTag. According to Apple, no location data or even location histories are stored. The client-server communication between iPhone or iPad on the one hand and AirTag on the other hand is encrypted throughout. This ensures that only the owner of a device has access to the location data and that nobody, including Apple, knows the identity or location of any device that is used to find the device.

AirTag pricing and availability

AirTags can be pre-ordered starting Friday, 4.23.2021, starting at 5 a.m. PDT. They will then be available from 4.30 a.m. on Friday. The cost is $ 29 each or $ 99 for a pack of four. For comparison: The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag also costs 29 dollars – but with less functionality.

I myself am someone who has waited a long time for the AirTags. Just because I’m constantly looking for my wallet and sometimes my keys. What about you? Are you planning to buy the AirTag (or multiple AirTags) – or will you skip it?
