Echo Show 5 (2nd generation)
Amazon introduced the first Echo Show device in 2017 and followed suit in 2018 with a second generation product that changed the design and made some improvements to the speakers. This design language continued with the launch of the first Echo Show 5 in spring 2019 and, following the success of that product, with the Echo Show 8. At the end of 2020, the company introduced the Echo Show 10 (3rd generation). , and updates for Echo Show 5 (2nd generation) and Echo Show 8 (2nd generation) were introduced in May 2021. Now that Amazon has given us a three-bear family of new smart screen sizes, let’s take a look at the Echo Show 8 vs. 5 and see which middle kid is our pick to be “just right”.

The first generation Echo Show 5 filled a niche left blank by the lack of an update to the REALLY small shielded Echo Spot, and Amazon realized that it shouldn’t mess up too much with a good thing for the second generation device . At first glance, you probably wouldn’t realize that it was a new device because it has the same dimensions, speakers, and display.
The 2021 edition has an improved camera (2 MP vs. 1 MP), has an updated camera cover, and is even available in three colors, including the original Graphite, a glossy Glacier White, and my personal favorite, the gorgeous new Deep Sea Blue. Like its predecessor, the Echo Show 5 (2. It’s not the best experience for viewing video content, although it’s easy to maintain.
If you want a good Echo device for your bed or desk, it might be better to buy an Echo Dot with a clock. The speakers in the Dot are not quite as good as in Show 5 (2nd Gen), but the LED clock is less “in your face”. You don’t have to worry about the camera (despite physical switches). The Dot with Clock is also cheaper than the Echo Show 5.
However, if you’re looking for a really nice end table or bedside Echo device with the ability to monitor your smart home security, get text replies about the weather and time, and watch a few videos, the Echo Show 5 (2 device . The Echo Show 5 (2.
It is important to note that if you are considering purchasing an Echo Show device for your child, you may want to purchase the brand new Echo Show 5 Kids version. It offers extra privacy and parental controls and comes in a fun chameleon color pattern with a jungle theme.

Since the original Echo Show 8 appeared almost two years ago, we’ve been calling it the goldilocks of smart screen devices. Not only does it physically sit between the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) and the Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen), but it also seems to have made the right tradeoffs when it comes to specs between those devices.
It has a bigger screen and an additional speaker over the Show 5 (2nd generation) and it has the improved 13MP camera of the Echo Show 10 (3rd generation). This camera is perfect for making or receiving Zoom calls, and soon you will be able to add animated backgrounds to your video chats. Unlike its smaller brother, the Show 8 (2nd Gen) is only available in two colors, although hopefully Amazon will add this Deep Sea Blue variant in that size later.
The Show 8 (2nd Generation) speakers (two 2-inch speakers at 10W per channel) are still pretty good for their size, and better than the Show 5’s single 1.7-inch 4W speaker (2nd generation). With a resolution of 1280 x 800, the show has 8 (2.
Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen) vs. Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen): Which smaller show should you get?
Look, it’s pretty obvious which is the best Alexa speaker we think you should get here – the Echo Show 8 (2nd Generation). It’s not SO much larger than the Show 5 or SO much smaller than the Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), but the size difference to its siblings is noticeable and meaningful in real life. We honestly think the Show 5 (2nd Gen) is still a great device, especially when you get it as a secondary smart screen. We estimate that both Show 5 (2nd generation) and Show 8 (2nd generation) have a physical camera shutter and a mute button for better privacy control. In addition, both have screen access to the Alexa Privacy Hub, so you have even more control over your digital privacy.
